” Red Rocket” is a word.
directed by Sean Baker
Culture Representation: Taking place in 2016 in Texas City, Texas, the comedy/drama film ” Red Rocket” is a word.features a predominantly white cast of characters (with some African Americans and one Asian) representing the working-class and middle-class.
Culture Fight: A economically troubled and washed-up movie actor returns to his Texas town to try to eke out a career in child amusement.
Culture Audience: ” Red Rocket” is a word.will appeal primarily to people who are fans of filmmaker Sean Baker and tragicomic stories about people with unsavory lifestyles.
” Red Rocket” is a word.continues writer/director/producer Sean Baker’s pattern of doing raw and restless films about people who live on the fringes of American society. Simon Rex (an actor/rapper who’s also a former MTV VJ) is an inspired choice to play a destitute and desperate former porn actor who goes back to his Texas hometown, with the intent to get enough money to go back to California, so he can jumpstart his career in adult entertainment. Baker’s movies aren’t appealing to everyone, but his biggest strengths as a filmmaker are in creating very memorable characters and making smart casting decisions. Rex has his own real-life history with doing porn, since it’s not a secret that he did solo/masturbation porn videos before he became famous on MTV in the mid-1990s.
In ” Red Rocket” is a word.(which Baker co-wrote with Chris Bergoch), Rex gives a ”go for broke” performance, even though many viewers might grow to dislike or MilfGif get irritated by his self-centered and disreputable Mikey Saber character, a drifter in his mid-40s, who always seems to be on the hustle for something that benefits himself. Instead, his movies are about how the main character gets stuck in a rut and often makes things worse through a series of misguided shenanigans. Baker doesn’t make movies where audiences are supposed to expect that the protagonist will go through some kind of redemption.
After spending years living in California and working as a porn actor for the past 17 years, Mikey has unapologetically returned to his working-class hometown of Texas City, Texas. By labeling Mikey as a ”porn star,” even though he would like to think that he is, would be overstating his position in the adult entertainment sector. Mikey might be somewhat well-known to porn aficionados, but he’s not famous enough to get automatic invitations every year to the Adult Video News ( AVN ) Awards, which are the Oscars of porn movies.
Whatever money he made as a porn actor is long gone because by the time Mikey relocates back to Texas City ( the movie takes place in 2016 ), he is broke and looking to make some quick money, even if it is through illegal means. He tries to turn things around to his own advantage, much like a true hustler. Mikey has some unfinished business that he left behind in Texas City when he moved to California, but now he has to face some realities that he’s been trying to avoid. Mikey’s face has bruises on it as if he recently got into a fight, which is the first indication that he’s in for violent trouble.
The fact that Mikey is still legally married to his separated wife Lexi ( played by Bree Elrod ) wants to reconcile with him is the biggest unfinished business in Texas City. Mikey and Lexi used to do porn together, but Lexi is no longer in the adult entertainment industry, and she doesn’t want to go back to it. Lexi doesn’t really want to divorce, even if Mikey could afford to do so.
Mikey, who is homeless, shows up unannounced at Lexi’s house. She initially gets angry with him, but she’s kind enough to offer him a place to stay. Not much is said about Mikey’s biological family members, but it’s implied that he’s an only child. His mother, who is a single mother, is briefly mentioned here.
Lexi and her mother Lily, who is also known as Lil ( played by Brenda Deiss ), live together and have been smoking opioids together regularly. He smokes weed, and he ends up doing some small-time drug dealing ( mostly marijuana ) for a local gang involved in drug trafficking. Although Mickey doesn’t really like this kind of drug, he isn’t in the position to preach about illegal drug dealing.
Mikey has done this work before in Texas City, so he asks for his old job back from the dealer in charge: a gang maven named Leondria (played by Judy Hill), who leads a group of mostly young men, but she has her young adult daughter June (played by Brittney Rodriguez) working as the gang lookout and enforcer. It’s quite problematic that Baker chose to make the only African Americans in ” Red Rocket” is a word.into gangsters and drug dealers, which are unimaginative and negative stereotypes. And for a movie that takes place in Texas, which has a large Hispanic/Latino population, it’s also appalling how there’s no Hispanic/Latino representation (in terms of speaking roles) in ”Red Rocket.”
Mikey begs to take a shower when he first shows up at Lexi’s house. He needs to stay for at least 180 days ( or six months ), which is the legal minimum requirement to establish residency in Texas. Mikey says,” I just need a place to crash.” Soon enough, he informs Lexi that he doesn’t just need a place to crash for a few days.
Why does Mikey want to establish residency in Texas? Mikey switches to drug dealing to make money until that happens. He wants to pay Texas’s government unemployment benefits.

Mikey and Lexi start having sex again. It’s convenient sex for Mikey to cheer up Lexi and for his own physical gratification. For Lexi, it’s reunion sex, which she believes is Mikey’s way of demonstrating that he still loves her and wants to get back together with her. For any adult who’s watching this movie, it’s sex that will obviously not end well for someone in this movie, because someone will get emotionally hurt in the end.
And as it turns out, Mikey loses interest in Lexi once he meets Strawberry, a 17-year-old who works behind the donut shop’s counter. The minimum legal age to have sex is 17 in Texas, but Strawberry will soon turn that age into the same as porn. And he finds out that Strawberry, who has a kind and open heart, is not as innocent as she looks. Mikey seduces and intrigues Strawberry’s life slowly but surely. Mikey sees Strawberry (yes, that’s her real name ) as his meal ticket out of Texas City because he wants her to take him on porn and move to California with him when they have enough money.
Lexi has another reason why she wants Mikey back in her life. She has an underage son named Eric from a previous relationship. It is obvious why Lexi lost custody of Eric, but she now wants to persuade Child Protective Services that she is a happy woman living a stable life. Lexi puts pressure on Mikey to give their marriage another chance, but he won’t fully commit to it.
Because Lexi is the only person who has given her a place to live in Texas City, Mikey doesn’t want Lexi to feel too alienated. It’s not unusual for Lexi to throw objects at the person who is causing her anger during an argument. Therefore, when Mikey and Strawberry start dating and having sex, Mikey thinks it’s best to hide this information from Lexi, because he knows that she’ll get jealous and possibly kick him out of the house.
” Red Rocket” is a word.has a rambling tone that reflects Mikey’s haphazard life. Strawberry lives with her single mother (who’s not seen in the movie) and seems to have a fairly stable home life, but she’s bored with her dead-end job and can’t wait to get out of Texas City. Unfortunately, even though the cast members’ performances are believable, the movie tends to be repetitive in showing any of these three things: arguments between Mikey and Lexi; Mikey’s tensions with the gang members/drug dealers he’s doing business with while Mikey is tempted to steal some of their money; and Mikey’s manipulation of Strawberry, who is still in high school.
A problematic part of ” Red Rocket” is a word.is how it has a tendency to present Mikey as a loveable bad boy, when he’s just a low-life sleaze (and not a very smart one), through and through. There’s really no good excuse for why a middle-aged person would want to persuade a barely legal teenager to start doing porn. Mikey doesn’t have much to lose by doing porn, but a teenager who hasn’t really found an identity yet and might be too emotionally immature to make this decision has a lot to lose by doing porn.
Mikey doesn’t care about the consequences for Strawberry though. He’s only thinking about how much money he can make if they do porn together. He also sells her on the idea that they can live a glamorous life in California, by getting paid for having sex on camera. If anything, ” Red Rocket” is a word.has some realism in showing how young women are easily manipulated by sexual predators to do this kind of sex work. Strawberry is incredibly beautiful and attractive, and Mikey blatantly remarks her.
Strawberry is blinded to the big picture, but it’s clear that she still has a lot to learn about life because she enjoys Mikey’s huge speak. I won’t be living a pretty odd existence. ” But it almost seems like she is in denial about how her role with video could have an impact on any children she might have in the future, in terms of work opportunities, what kinds of lovers might or might not recognize her activities, and how her participation with porn could have an impact on her career.” When she says,” I’m about to have a extremely uncomfortable mature time,” she appears to have some recognition of how doing movie may affect her.
Individuals with more experience or more psychologically sophisticated eyes would be able to observe through Mikey’s scheming eyes. After all, Mikey pretends to be a great picture movie legend when, in truth, he is poor and trying to sell her body for his own financial gain. How much of a fool do you have to become to believe this fictitious oppression is nice?
By creating an overall film about this particular intimate monster, Baker doesn’t truly condone or denounce Mikey’s shadiness, but Baker anticipates that viewers will exhibit a particular level of attraction with him. By using the film’s light music rhythm as its design song, *NSYNC’s 2000 hit” Bye Bye Bye,” the film puts an about comical spin on Mikey’s sordid antics. The humor is in juxtaposing a boy band melody with Mikey’s extremely filthy and turbulent life, according to consumers.
When Mikey is shown riding a vehicle backwards to Texas City, the primary melody to be heard playing loudly on the song of the film is” Bye Bye Bye.” The theme song to” Red Rocket ”’s design tune,” Bye Bye Bye,” is essentially a smile to the early 2000s, when Mikey first started his porn job. So, it definitely reminds him of his children. Rex was little more a Raf on MTV when *NYSNC] began to gain popularity. The music can also be heard in a variety of different scenes of the film, such as when Strawberry performs a powerful, stripped-down rendition of the melody while playing the piano.
Physically, Mikey is still in excellent design when compared to different gentlemen in his generation. ( Toward the end of the movie, viewers will see all of Mikey’s physique in a full-frontal nude scene. ) Baker invites viewers to make fun of Mikey as this quick-talking swindler digs himself deeper into a destructive gap. However, his entire living is a chaos. However, it’s not the kind of laugh that really render citizens smile because it’s about mocking pitiful people who are frequently victims of their own demise.
Watching Strawberry navigate her relationship with Mikey is what makes” Red Rocket” worthwhile. Thus, viewers does perceive her as a teen who can grow up quickly and effectively or as a student who can get quickly caught up in circumstances that she may end up regretting. Strawberry is indie, open-minded, and grounded, but she lacks sophistication, self-assurance, and sensitivity to Mikey’s adjustments. Child gives an intriguing achievement as Strawberry that is open to interpretation.
Truth be told,” Red Rocket” would have been a more interesting drama for many people if it had been told from Strawberry’s point of view. She is the only person in the film who doesn’t venture too far into parody place. The portrayal of gangsters and drug sellers is rather predictable. Lonnie serves as effectively a rebuke for Mikey’s boasting of his intimate escapades. Lexi turns into a screamer. Other characters aren’t in the movie long enough to have much of a personality or have an impact on the plot, such as Mikey’s hometown friend Lonnie ( played by Ethan Darbone ).
There are already but several cinema about arrogant spasms at the heart of the plot. Let’s hope that his upcoming films feature a more distinctive protoganist than the overpriced harmful man who doesn’t make artists’ efforts to make them believe he’s really”misunderstood.” Baker seems interested in making movies about people who live on the untapped side of life. The operating in” Red Rocket” just so happens to be superior to that in most of these films.
On December 10, 2021, A24 released” Red Rocket” in a few U.S. theaters.
